In the coming weeks, the Center for Medicaid and Medicare Services (CMS) will release the final rule for implementation of the Lymphedema Treatment Act. We will alert you as soon as that occurs.
To recap where things stand, the proposed rule was released on June 30th and a 60-day public comment period followed. If you have not yet done so, we encourage you to read the full proposed rule and related public comments. The final rule may incorporate changes based on the feedback received in the public comments.
CMS has already begun to inform beneficiaries about the upcoming new coverage by including it in their 2024 Medicare & You Handbook.

Once the final rule is released, CMS will also be sending information to providers and suppliers. And eventually, patients will be able to use the Medicare Equipment and Suppliers online search tool to find suppliers who carry compression supplies.

Lastly, if you have any type of insurance other than traditional Medicare, it is very important that you complete the action item below if you have not yet done so!
This includes private insurance plans (whether employer-based or purchased separately), supplemental and secondary plans, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, TriCare, and VA health care.

The Lymphedema Treatment Act requires Medicare coverage for lymphedema compression garments and supplies to begin on January 1, 2024. Most other public and private health insurance policies follow Medicare precedent, but there is no law requiring them to do so.
The administrators of other insurance policies likely don’t even know about the upcoming Medicare coverage changes, which is why it’s so important that they hear from you! There are over 900 private insurance companies in the United States, and thousands of individual policies.
