Karen’s Story

by Heather on November 12, 2013

I celebrated three years of breast cancer survival last September. I had radiation treatment, which went well, but no one warned me that a side effect of radiation or chemo could be lymphedema. I’ve had three rounds of mastitis, each time worse and more resistant to antibiotics. Lots of pain and sleepless nights later, I was diagnosed with lymphedema. I completed several sessions of physical therapy and saw great improvement. However, I never dreamed that lymphedema is a life-long condition/worry. I am faithful to complete my physical therapy exercises every day-which I must do the rest of my life, as well as wear a compression garment (sleeve) the rest of my life.

Yes! Word needs to get out about lymphedema, the pain, swelling involved & the very expensive compression garments. I’m blessed, in that my swelling is light, but I’ve seen a poor lady who had it in her leg & it was huge, no compression garment nor wrapping on it. I assume she can’t afford it.

We all need to contact our Senators & Representatives & not let up until they listen and realize it’s real & we need insurance coverage.
