My husband, Robert, has been living with lymphedema for a number of years now. He was first diagnosed with lymphedema in 2004.
At first, because I was still employed and had health insurance, my husband’s support stockings were covered by Unitedhealthcare insurance.
However, even though I still have health insurance and my husband is covered by my insurance, his support stockings are not a covered expense.
This is because we are both retired and have Medicare as a primary insurance and Unitedhealthcare as a secondary insurance.
Medicare does not cover the expense of the support stockings and because that insurance doesn’t, then neither does Unitedhealthcare.
Each pair is approximately $246.00 because they are custom tailored to my husband’s legs as each leg is a slightly different size than the other one. My husband wears these stockings every day and if by chance they should be snagged or get a run, a new pair has to be ordered and there would be another $246.00 expense.
My husband’s primary doctor is always pleased to see that he is wearing his stockings each day. If he wouldn’t, the swelling in the legs would be very severe. Thank you for allowing me to explain this situation to you.
