I developed lymphedema ten years ago from having had cancer. My arm had a bug bite and swelled up to the size of the “incredible hulk”. I was fortunate that the nurse at the emergency room realized that it was lymphedema.
Physical therapy brought the swelling down and then began my days of compression sleeves, which really has helped. With lymphedema you have to be careful of bug bites, cuts, and injuries to the affected area. It requires taking antibiotics immediately to prevent infection. My understanding is that we all have a layer of protein under the skins and when the lymph nodes are removed, the protein can’t function to push the infection out of the affected area. Compression aids in doing this for the body, in addition to preventing swelling on a daily basis.
The compression sleeves are expensive and need to be replaced at least every 6 months. I use the old sleeves when I garden, paint or swim, etc. The Reid sleeve that I have to wear to bed is even more expensive, about $1600.00, and you’re limited to be able to purchase these only from certain retailers. Having Medicare coverage for these items is really a necessity.
