What Lymphedema Advocates Are Saying About Their District Meetings

by Heather on August 2, 2017

In our last few newsletters we’ve encouraged you to attend a district meeting with your members of Congress. I know that may sound intimidating, which is why I wanted to share these words from some of our members who have attended district meetings this summer.

From Karen in AZ: “It was easier than I’d imagined!

From Shari in VT: “They were attentive and asked many questions and appreciated the show and tell part.

From Carla in AL: “The meeting was encouraging.

From Mary Jo in KS: “If she wasn’t for LTA before we got there, I think she is now.

Below is an email from Rebecca. She wrote this inspiring message to her fellow WI members after scheduling and attending a meeting at her Senator’s office.

These advocates and many others have done it and so can you! Learn more on our District Meetings page. Together, we can pass the Lymphedema Treatment Act!

I am Rebecca, I recently went to Senator Johnson’s office in Oshkosh to ask him to
Co-Sponsor the LTA again.

I would like to first tell you how I got a meeting with his office. I went to his website and clicked on request a meeting. I typed in the reason why I wanted a meeting and clicked send. About 2 or 3 weeks later I got a response to my meeting request. I set up a time with Amy, his Lead in Oshkosh.

The meeting went very well. I got to his office and checked in. I sat down with Amy in the private office of Senator Johnson. She was very welcoming and receptive to my 10 year old daughter and I. I brought with me to this meeting the congressional/senate packet and the latest co-sponsor numbers. All the information you will ever need, beside your own personal story is in this packet. My daughter Alaina was an asset to this meeting as she gave a different side of my LE story.

Heather and everyone from the LTA board give us all the tools we need to meet with, call, email, and write our representatives. The only thing that stands between us and passing this legislation is us. Remember, they represent us, they work for us. We need to let them know something needs to change, people are struggling. They won’t know if we don’t send that email, make that call, schedule that
meeting.

They are people too, awesome ones at that! They chose the path to represent millions of people. We chose them to be our voice. But or voice can’t be heard if we don’t speak, write, meet, or bring awareness to the problem.

The only way it won’t change, is that we didn’t ask for it to and stayed silent. Don’t hope for the change, make the change happen.

Please, if you need any help in anyway to get in touch with Senator Johnson or any other Senators ASK, everyone is here to help you raise your voice to them. We are a team. Team Wisconsin! One of the best states in this nation!

My hometown here in Peshtigo, WI, rebuilt itself from the ashes of the deadliest fire in this nations history. I bet all of the rebuilding started by the determination of one person. That one person inspired 10 people. Those 10 people inspired hundreds and the town was rebuilt and thrived!

Be that one person. Contact your Senator today.
