Carol’s Story

by Heather on August 5, 2013

I am a two time breast cancer survivor. I was diagnosed the first time in 1991. I had an axial node dissection and as a result of that and radiation in 1992 I developed lymphedema in my right arm.

Over the course of 21 years I have had cellulitis in this arm over 20 times, hospitalized and on IV antibiotics. I have had numerous months of therapy and surgeries to help correct the lymphedema. They have helped but lymphedema cannot be cured. The one constant in the 22 years are compression sleeves. These sleeves are custom made and last approximately 6 months. The elasticity gets stretched and is no longer effective. These sleeves are very expensive but are the only salvation I have for controlling this disease. It would be so appreciated if Medicare would cover the cost of these sleeves. I worked for 40 years contributing to Medicare and now need their help in covering the expense of these garments.
