I am a RN who recently underwent surgery for uterine cancer. I developed lymphedema in my abdomen and lower extremities 2 months after surgery. It has affected my life tremendously both physically and mentally. I have to wear compression stockings that have to be made custom to provide the amount of compression where it is needed to help control the swelling. They are very expensive and cost around $500. I am fortunate to be able to continue to work at a desk job for now and am able to purchase my own compression garments. I am not sure if my employer will continue to allow me to do a desk job in the future. I am in fear of loosing my job because I am no longer capable of doing it in the same capacity as I did prior to lymphedema.
I used to be a very active person and jogger. I can no longer run or hike or enjoy outdoor activities. Lymphedema has been very painful and at times I have trouble just walking. I can not do anything for any long length of time. Like standing and walking and even sitting to long is difficult. Without the compression stockings I know the lymphedema will worsen and I would become incapacitated and wheelchair bond. I have had to appeal claims with my insurance carrier to get some of the treatments that I need. I am still in the process of trying to get coverage for my garments. The garments are the number one treatment for lymphedema. I find it hard to believe that they are not covered by medicare. They prevent the disease from worsening and therefore will keep the costs down from cellulitis and infections that are caused from the swelling. |
