Karen’s Story

by Heather on March 28, 2014

My mother has lymphedema in both of her legs, which the doctor just diagnosed a couple of weeks ago. This was discovered less than two weeks after my father passed away and my mother had been his primary care giver. She is receiving treatment at St. Mary’s Rehabilitation facility in Huntington, WV. She has to wear soft casts on both legs for 2-4 weeks until the swelling goes down. She is being fitted for the special compression garments that she’ll wear once the soft casts come off. My mother tells me that these garments are quite expensive and are currently not covered by medicare or any insurance. If the doctor and/or physical therapist prescribes the garments then it seems to me that it should be covered.

I am a supporter of the federal bill that is being presented to correct this issue.
