Penny’s Story

by Heather on August 29, 2014

I was diagnosed in Dec of 2009 with breast cancer. after 3 surgeries and Chemotherapy and radiation I was left with lymphedema of the left arm and hand. I was very swollen and sore. I had 20 physical therapy treatments to work on massage to help with swelling and had 2 infections that were really bad. I had to purchase all my ancillary supplies for therapy from the wraps and sleeves and gloves. Once you get it under control you have to maintain your massage and compression garments to keep it livable., My insurance would on buy 2 garments a year and you need to wear one everyday and They cannot be worn more than one day in a row as they lose their compression and have to be washed to bring it back.

My therapist ordered a pump for me to use at home to help with fluid control. My insurance only makes 10 rental payments a year and that is only 80% so we have to cover the other out of pocket. We have a high deductible and co pays for everything. Now I have to buy garments and rent the pump to keep my limbs usable. Yes I now have cancer recurrence for the fourth time and have lymphedema in my right arm and hand also. Now I need 12 sleeves at $100 each with gloves at $85 each for both limbs. and the insurance covers 60% of 2 a year. WE need help!! WE are in debt over our heads trying to keep these things available for me to have daily function and to work . I am an Exec. Assistant\ and I need my hands to do my job. WE need our insurance to cover the cost of these supplies so we can lead productive lives. This cost is hindering us ever retiring or maybe of keeping our home. Our debt is unreal. WE cover drug addiction , Alcohol addiction, and numerous self inflicting addictions bu5t not non chosen life debilitating medical issues. can someone please help us!!!
