Thank House Members, Ask Senators to Cosponsor!

by Heather on December 16, 2019

Like me, you may still be glowing from the excitement of our bill having been passed in the House! But it’s time to get back to work. Let’s see what more we can get done before Congress breaks for recess at the end of this week.

Please send an email to your Representative, to express your appreciation for the LTA having passed the House. We’ve prepared a special email form just for this, complete with template letter. Click here to send your email now.

Below are all 100 Senators. Two call scripts are provided – one for those who have already cosponsored and another for those who have not. Please call both of your Senators using this information. We understand that emailing is quicker and easier for most people, but calling is more effective.

Lastly, I’m proud to share with you this letter from 30 organizations, which was delivered to Congressional Leadership last week, urging them to “publicly express [their] support for the Lymphedema Treatment Act, and work to include the bill in whatever compromise package emerges.”

Thank you for your advocacy!

CALL SCRIPT FOR COSPONSORS:

I am a constituent calling in support of the Lymphedema Treatment Act, Senate bill number S.518, and would like to thank Senator [name] for being a cosponsor of this bill. This issue is important to me because… [2-3 brief sentences].

The Lymphedema Treatment Act was passed in the House last week and now it’s time for the Senate to do the same. With 70 Senate cosponsors and 372 House cosponsors this is the most supported healthcare bill in Congress. Please ask Senator [name] to do whatever [he/she] can to see that this bipartisan bill is included in the next healthcare package that moves in the Senate.”

CALL SCRIPT FOR NON-COSPONSORS:

I am a constituent calling in support of the Lymphedema Treatment Act, which was just passed in the house last week. This bipartisan bill has 70 Senate cosponsors and I would like for Senator [name] to cosponsor as well.

This issue is important to me because… [2-3 brief sentences]. Please ask Senator [name] to cosponsor Senate bill number S.518, the Lymphedema Treatment Act.”

TIPS ON PERSONALIZING YOUR MESSAGE:

The most effective things you can convey are why your doctor prescribed compression garments are essential to your health and quality of life. The focus should be on their medical necessity, and how they enable you to manage your lymphedema, prevent complications like infections, keep you able to work, take care of your family, etc. – whatever is most applicable for you.

The most important thing to avoid saying is that they are expensive. Cost, or a person’s ability to afford to pay out of pocket, is not a reason why something should be covered by insurance, only medical necessity is. Keep the focus on compression garments being essential for the treatment and management of lymphedema, just as insulin is to a diabetic.
