I was told I had Breast Cancer in 2001. I went through treatment and noticed a swelling in my left hand and arm. Shortly there after I was diagnosied with Lymphedema. I went to Sister Kenny in Minneapolis and learned how to manage my Lymphedema and was successful for several years until I was told that I had once again my breast cancer had reared it’s ugly head.
I went through five surgeries trying to get a clear margin. I was left with a huge cavity in my left breast and needed reconstructiton surgery.
During the second to last fill my lymph nodes gave out and my left hand and arm began to swell. I spent 6 months going to a physical therapist until I ran out of money. Today I go every two weeks to a Massage Therapist who does deep tissue massage to help me keep the fiborus tissues in check.
Every night I wear a Tribute and wrap my hand with 3-4 bandages from my fingers up to the top of my shoulder. During the day I wear a glove and sleeve that keep my hand and arm compressed. Since I sit behind a computer all day, my glove only lasts approx. 2-3 months.
It is costing me approx. $1200 a year for the massage therapy which is not covered under any insurance besides $1200 out of pocket for the glove and sleeve. I have insurance but I first have to pay $3000 out of pocket with a $8000 family out of pocket. I make $50,000/yr and am a widow. I don’t know what I’m going to do when I retire as there is no coverage for Lymphedema at this time and my illness will never go away.
